Our Purpose

How We Began

The Y's Men were founded in Toledo, Ohio, USA in 1922 to support the local YMCA. Today the Y's Men International have over 1,400 clubs with 27,000 members in 66 countries on all continents. Y's Men International will be recognized globally as a service organization promoting cultural awareness leading to brotherhood and world peace.

In 1923 Sydney, Cape Breton was the first Y' Men's Club outside of the United States.

"Serving the YMCA & Community since 1962"

Every organization has its guiding principles. Y's Men International has some very special guidelines and objectives based on Christian principles that were the basis of the first YMCA and then Y's Men International.

We are International in scope and outlook because we believe that we must be involved in issues common to all people, as we promote peace, justice, equality and understanding.

We are a Service Club that tries to work with people as well as for them, giving our personal talents and skills in expressing God's love for all.

Our Partnership with the YMCA gives us the opportunity to maximize our resources in reaching out to people.

The Christian beliefs that underlie our efforts stress the worth of each human being and our responsibility to reach out to those on need of love and compassion.

We are a movement of men, women and youth who care enough for others that we are prepared to act unselfishly while sharing that special fellowship for which Y's Men are known.

We serve as an outreach arm of the YMCA. Y's Men also has its own international programs in which club members can join. Each club has projects chosen to suit the needs of the members and community. There is a great diversity in projects as each club responds to the individual needs of their YMCA and communities. That means that there is something for everyone and lots of opportunity to try different types of service.

Our Motto:

"To Acknowledge the Duty that Accompanies Every Right."
